Every morning

i am practicing being self-assertive. I practice by speaking loudly, *not* that i have *ever* been accused of being inaudible. So, every morning, i pass by the doorman, and I scream, "Morning! How are you? Fine, thanks. Have a good day!" Then, i proceed by screaming at the barista, "Medium dark, please." And that, is how I begin every morning.

Many little things exterior to oneself change who we feel we are: flats or heels, hair up or down, volume of words, language spoken, formality of dress. And sometimes, we shock ourselves. But, I thought culture, language, history are elements manipulatable for identity, expression, communication. To what extent are we objects manipulated by the very language and dress we manipulate? Perhaps it's the age old adage involving the chicken and the egg. But that should not trivialize the question.

Help me, Mother.

i love your method of practicing self-assertiveness. it's so easy, BWAHAHAHA. i think my hair totally changes who i feel i am. okie, i believe that the stylist, having learned that i drink whisky and tequila straight-up, decided to gimme an electrocution-type hairstyle this afternoon. so now, don't think no one will ever believe i'm a goodie-two-shoe no more. before today, i always tied my hair up because i didn't wanna deal with my worn-out 6-month-old perm. people thought i was a "missie" (what they call teachers in hk). hm... so i think i'm manipulated by hair.

Happy Birthday, bonbon!! How are you celebrating? is your new hair part of the present you're giving to yourself? Post up a picture!!

Anyhoo, yeah... try screaming. you'd feel like a brand new (self-assertive) person. It feels actually quite shocking.
